SANIBONANI Zanele Muholi & Students of the Muholi Art Institute Hosted by Jonathan Carver Moore Gallery

An opening reception was held at the Jonathan Carver Moore Gallery on June 16th, 2023 for Sanibonani, a group show that will run until August 5, 2023.

The title, Sanibonani, a Zulu greeting, is a source of acknowledgement. This show will include works from Black queer South African artist, Zanele Muholiand their students from the Muholi Art Institute. Zanele Muholi has exhibited at the Tate Modern, Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Seattle Art Museum, LACMA, Biennale Arte 2019, just to name a few and has an upcoming solo exhibition at SFMOMA opening early 2024.

This show will be the first time Zanele Muholi and their students from the Muholi Art Institute will be exhibiting together outside of South Africa–making international history.  All the exhibiting artists are Black South African artists who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or gender nonconforming. The photographic works in the show include self-portraiture and intimate moments of couples claiming space and solidifying their visibility.
