How have I not known of this magical place? Having enjoyed the hospitality of nearly every Napa Valley hotel over the years, I’m not quite sure how this Silverado Trail gem escaped my travel writer attention. Perhaps it’s due to the unassuming entrance, heralded by a simple and elegant ‘M’ that might go unnoticed unless sought. Or maybe it’s the well-hidden placement along the banks of the Napa River. Whatever the reasons, they are now moot. Milliken Creek Inn is now very much on my radar and anyone asking my advice for Napa Valley hotel accommodations is directed to this lovely spot.
The 11 room inn recently underwent an extensive renovation that places it within the luxe category of hotels. A neutral palette, accented with wood and greenery, creates an ambience of contemporary elegance and calm. The sweeping update includes completely new décor, including custom-made furnishings, modern lighting, curated art, and rich hardwood flooring. Spaces indoors and out have been reimagined to take advantage of the inn’s exceptional riverfront setting on three verdant acres at the base of the Silverado Trail.
Many of the rooms feature tree branch framed river views, private decks or patios, fireplaces, and oversized soaking tubs. Four have their own fire pits. All feature king-sized beds, Nespresso coffee makers, L’Occitane bath products and luxurious bed and bath linens. In-room tech upgrades include Bluetooth Tivoli speakers and 55” Samsung televisions with complimentary Apple TV streaming services, allowing guests to cast from their own devices. iPads let guests browse magazine and newspaper subscriptions and order in-room dining (pizza, charcuterie, cheeses) – though the complimentary evening wine, cheese, and cookie hour, s’mores packs, and the decadent, made-to-order breakfast might suffice. (Selections include a frittata, omelette, Belgian waffle, bagel with choice of toppings, bacon, toast, pastry, and more. The choice was difficult.)
The property’s spacious common areas encourage mingling, and secluded spots are perfect for quiet conversation. The lobby gathering room with its fireplace and new beverage bar invites guests to share their days’ adventures. An adjacent deck boasts a sleek new fire pit overlooking the river and grounds below. Additional, intimate seating areas with fire pits flank the koi pond. Winding paths throughout the gardens are punctuated with fountains and mature trees; the inn’s expansive, manicured grounds are ideal for afternoon croquet and other lawn games. Or simply take a good read, and settle-in on one of many shaded chaise lounges for an afternoon of pure relaxation.
Evening turn down service is a Milliken must. Do not – repeat – do not deny yourself this indulgent amenity. Flameless candles, low lighting, and soft music set a dreamy atmosphere, well enjoyed whether you’re traveling solo, with girlfriends, or with a partner.
