We chat with Jonathan Wilhelm, Managing Partner of The Ruse and Mayacama Golf Club to learn more about this lovely inn.

HL: What makes The Ruse Healdsburg unique?

Jonathan Wilhelm: What makes it unique is that is very rare for a boutique inn to have the amenities and common area spaces we have, these are normally seen in large resorts.

The architecture with the old mansion building next to our modern dining and meeting pavilion creates a distinctive contrast.

Most of the rooms are unique and can provide a new experience during multiple visits. The property is also perfectly set up for a full 11 room buyout creating a great corporate or family retreat.

HL: What are the benefits of staying at the Ruse Healdsburg?

JW: The benefits are having a 3 acre property with only 11 rooms and a number of amenities the serenity and privacy guests experience is second to none.  For the golfers out there, having access to a top 100 private club is a huge benefit.  Also the wine program that will be included in the room rates will be vibrant and represent some of Sonoma and Napa’s best producers.

HL: Share the inspiration behind The Ruse Healdsburg.

JW: This is owned by a small group of partners that includes the Mayacama ownership group. Mayacama has been looking for a connection to Healdsburg for some time as we have needed additional lodging and this property has a lot of synergies with Mayacama.

We consider Mayacama a sister property as the Club manages The Ruse.  We will provide Ruse guests access to the private Mayacama Golf Club should they wish to golf or use the spa or hiking trails. (Mayacama green fee and a caddie fee not included)

HL: What’s the story behind the name?

JW: One of the definitions of Ruse is “more than meets the eye”.  When you walk into the front door of the old mansion building you assume the property is a quaint little building and then to walk out onto the back pool and pavilion area and to see the expansive property and amenities it is certainly more than meets the eye.

HL: Share details about the impressive putting green.

JW: There are a number of golf resorts that have these large, undulating and really cool putting courses and greens.  Because we manage an 18 hole golf course we have the staff and necessary tools to maintain a very high end putting green (named “the corkscrew”) that will have target holes and an actual course that guests can use and attempt to get the lowest score….. hence a top spot on the “Honor Roll” (an ode) to the old Honor Mansion name.

HL: Do guests love the convenient location of The Ruse Healdsburg?

JW: Absolutely! Healdsburg being located in the heart of wine country and right in the middle of the Russian River and Dry Creek appellations makes this an ideal starting point for a multitude of wine tours.

The culinary scene in Healdsburg is very strong and you are only 30 to 40 minutes from exploring the Napa Valley and 30 to 40 minutes from the coast.
