Frameline, the 49th San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, concluded its remarkable 11-day run on June 28, having presented nearly 150 films from 40 countries and sold out an impressive 50 screenings. Frameline49 brought 200 filmmakers from around the world to the Bay Area, opening with Sophie Hyde’s intergenerational family drama “Jimpa” to a packed audience of 1,000 at the Toni Rembe Theatre, and closing with James Sweeney’s Sundance standout “Twinless” in front of a sold-out crowd of over 700 at the Herbst Theatre.
The festival’s most poignant programming included Sam Feder’s “Heightened Scrutiny,” which played to another full house just days after the Supreme Court’s ruling in US v. Skrmetti upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Other highlights featured the world premiere of Bay Area-set “WICKET” with local dancer Bboy Wicket, the North American premiere of Teddy Award-winning “Lesbian Space Princess” starring Shabana Azeez and hometown premieres of Angelo Madsen’s “A Body to Live In” and Rashaad Newsome and Johnny Symons’ “Assembly.” The festival’s Pride Kickoff Party at Oasis featured performances by Nicki Jizz and the all-Black drag group Reparations, while RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Miss Peppermint participated in a post-screening Q&A for her film “A Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint”.
