On May 17 Alonzo King LINES Ballet welcomed a crowd of its guests and supporters to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for its annual spring fundraising gala. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, joined by his daughter Taya, gave the opening remarks and other special guests on hand included actress Cheri Oteri and Oakland-born R&B singer-songwriter Goapele were among the local VIPs in the audience that night, all waiting to be transported by LINES Ballet’s unique vision of contemporary dance.
The gala offered lucky attendees an evening of world-class performances, featuring the world premiere collaboration between choreographer Alonzo King and American jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. The dance company also performed King’s iconic Scheherazade, with music reinterpreted by the late Zakir Hussain. In all, the evening raised over $400,000 in support of Alonzo King LINES Ballet’s performance and education initiatives.
