Discovering Clos Solène

A journey through family, tradition, and elegance in Paso Robles

Nestled in the heart of the Willow Creek AVA in Paso Robles, California, Clos Solène is a hidden gem that embodies the spirit of family and the artistry of winemaking.

During my recent visit to this boutique, family-owned winery, I was fortunate enough to meet the visionary winemaker, Guillaume Fabre, whose passion for crafting elegant wines reflects both his rich heritage and the stunning terroir of his adopted home.

The picturesque landscape that surrounds the 27-acre estate greeted me as I arrived at Clos Solène. The rolling hills, lined with meticulously tended vines, create a bucolic setting that instantly transports you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Fabre family, who lives and works on the estate, extends a warm welcome to each visitor, making you feel like part of their family from the moment you step onto the property.

Guillaume, a sixth-generation winemaker, carries the legacy of his ancestors from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. His journey into the world of winemaking began with a degree in oenology and viticulture in Carcassonne, where he honed his craft at his family’s estate.

However, it was a serendipitous meeting with Solène—a moment he describes as “a bolt of lightning”—that would change the course of his life. This enchanting encounter led to a love story and a shared dream of establishing their own winery, culminating in the founding of Clos Solène in 2007.

During my afternoon at the vineyard, I had the privilege of walking among the vines with Guillaume and his team. It was fascinating to learn about their innovative practices, such as grafting Rhône varietals onto 20-year-old Syrah vines and co-fermenting distinctive blends.

These advanced techniques, combined with Old World winemaking methods, allow Clos Solène to produce wines that truly reflect their terroir. The attention to detail and the craftsmanship involved in each bottle are evident, and I could sense the dedication and love that goes into every stage of the winemaking process.

As we strolled through the vineyard, Guillaume shared stories about his family, including his three children—Clémentine, Jean, and Juliette—who all contribute to the winery in their own ways.

It was heartwarming to hear how he named some of his favorite wines after them: Sweet Clémentine, Cuvée Jean, and the recently introduced Cuvée Juliette, which debuted in 2019. This personal touch adds an extra layer of intimacy to the Clos Solène experience, making each bottle not just a product but a cherished family memory.

The tasting experience at Clos Solène is equally intimate. Just outside the Fabre home, visitors have the opportunity to sample their exquisite wines while immersed in the vineyard’s serene surroundings. I had the pleasure of trying their flagship offerings, each one a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that defines Clos Solène.

The 2023 La Rose, a delightful blend of 72% Grenache, 18% Grenache Gris, and 10% Mourvèdre, captured my palate with its vibrant fruit notes and refreshing acidity. The 2022 Hommage Blanc, composed of 80% Roussanne, 16% Viognier, and 4% Grenache Blanc, showcased a beautiful balance of floral and citrus aromas, making it a perfect pairing for a sunny afternoon.

One of the standout wines was the 2021 Fleur de Solène, a harmonious blend of 49% Syrah, 26% Grenache, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its complex layers of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of earthiness made it a memorable pour.

However, it was the 2021 Harmonie, with its 72% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, and 12% Syrah, that truly stole the show. This estate fruit cuvée reflects the essence of the Willow Creek AVA, showcasing the terroir’s unique character in every sip.

As the sun began to set over the vineyard, casting a golden glow across the landscape, I felt a deep connection to the Fabre family and their commitment to producing exceptional wines. My visit to Clos Solène was more than just a wine tasting; it was a celebration of family, tradition, and the artistry of winemaking.

In a world where mass production often overshadows the personal touch, Clos Solène stands as a beacon of hope for those who appreciate the beauty of handcrafted wines.

Each bottle is a story, a reflection of the land, and a homage to the Fabre family’s dream. For anyone looking to experience the warmth of a family-run winery and the elegance of French-inspired wines, a visit to Clos Solène is an absolute must.
