The Legion of Honor has welcomed its new Wayne Thiebaud exhibit with a VIP reception for the museum’s closest friends and supporters. On March 20, nearly 400 donors, lenders and artists gathered at the Legion to celebrate legendary local artist Wayne Thiebaud at the preview of Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art. Those accustomed to the evocative whimsy of Thiebaud’s most popular paintings may be in for a surprise with this show. Revered for his dreamy confections, Thiebaud was also a self-described art “thief,” who openly drew ideas from a diverse array of European and American artworks.
This collection of paintings and personal objects represents Thiebaud’s inventive reinterpretations and direct copies of famous pieces by other artists. Approximately 65 works, including paintings of people, still lives of cakes and soaring cityscapes, offer an in-depth exploration of Thiebaud’s lifelong engagement with art history. Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art is on view through August 17.
