On February 27 more than 1,000 donors, members and artists gathered at the de Young museum for a special reception and preview of a new photography exhibit, Paul McCartney Photographs: 1963-64 Eyes of the Storm. The collection of 250 personal photographs taken by McCartney offer a behind-the-scenes look at the meteoric rise of one of the world’s most celebrated bands. Documenting The Beatles’ first US trip from December 1963 to February 1964, the photos join a collection of video clips and archival materials to capture a pivotal moment in pop culture history.
Sipping on the signature “Maccarita” cocktail, party guests enjoyed private gallery time to peruse the collection, with live entertainment from the Chulita Vinyl Club providing the vibes. McCartney’s images reveal the intensity of his life on tour, as The Beatles were whisked from concerts to hotels, trailed by enthusiastic fans from New York to Miami. Paul McCartney Photographs: 1963-64 Eyes of the Storm is on view at the de Young museum through July 6. Visit ticketing.famsf.org; tickets start at $35, members have free admission.
